Ep 362 – Prepare for the Future You Cannot See
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Stoic leadership helps founders prepare without certainty. Scott Smith explains how to act faithfully when you know the direction but not the road.
🎙️ Episode Summary
“We must make the best use that we can of the things which are in our power.” — Epictetus
Stoicism teaches that uncertainty is not the same as being lost. In this episode, Scott Smith reflects on what leaders should do when they believe they are moving in the right direction but cannot yet see very far down the road.
For founders and executives, this is a familiar pressure. You may want the future to arrive with a clear plan, guaranteed revenue, visible risks, and a precise next step. But life and leadership rarely work that way. Often, you do not know the road. You may not even know the full destination. But you may know the direction.
Scott explains that this is where Stoic leadership becomes practical. Epictetus does not invite passivity. He asks us to distinguish between what belongs to us and what does not. The outcome may not belong to us. The timing may not belong to us. Other people’s choices do not belong to us. But our judgment, effort, preparation, character, learning, restraint, and willingness to become more capable do belong to us.
This episode blends Stoicism, faith, business, family, and personal reflection. Scott discusses investing in education, preparing for future work, giving children room to grow, navigating uncertainty in business, and learning a new podcast rhythm. He also reflects on the story of Levi in the Book of Ether, whose present chapter did not reveal the next verse.
That is Stoic leadership for founders and executives: do what is yours to do, prepare responsibly, and stop demanding that the future reveal itself before you are willing to act.
You may not know the road. But if you know the direction, act accordingly.
