🎙️ Episode Summary

Marcus Aurelius wrote that human beings are made to work together, like the parts of a body.

Stoic leadership reminds us that no part can serve the whole well if it does not understand what the whole is trying to accomplish. In this episode, Scott Smith explains why distributed and offshore teams often miss the mark, not because they lack ability, but because they have been separated from the customer context that makes good judgment possible.

For founders and executives, this is a critical leadership discipline. A client may ask for something specific. The account manager may understand the concern behind the request. The local team may know the history, the relationship, and what is at risk. But by the time the work reaches the offshore team, all of that meaning may be stripped away. The request becomes a task: update the report, fix the ticket, complete this by Thursday.

Then the team completes the assignment and hears that the work missed the mark. Leadership says they need to think more like the customer, but the team has never heard from the customer. They do not know what the client is trying to solve, why the request matters now, or what could be damaged if the work is wrong.

This episode challenges leaders to stop calling every delivery issue an ownership problem. Sometimes the issue is management. Sometimes the people doing the work have been disconnected from the very reason the work exists.

That is Stoic leadership for founders and executives: give people enough context to understand who they serve, what outcome matters, and why the work matters now.

Your team cannot reliably protect a customer they are never allowed to know.
