Stoic leadership teaches founders to move beyond blame and examine causes. In this episode, Scott Smith challenges a common assumption in growing service businesses: when offshore work comes back late, incomplete, misunderstood, or commercially useless, the problem may not be the offshore team. It may be the operating environment around them.

For founders and executives, this is a critical leadership discipline. Offshore teams are often expected to take ownership while being denied the context, authority, customer access, and decision rights that ownership requires. They receive tasks, while the local team receives the strategy. They execute assignments, while others understand the client pressure, business consequences, and shifting priorities.

Scott connects this to Marcus Aurelius’ discipline of examining causes before reacting with irritation. A leader must ask better questions before replacing people. Was the intended result clear? Was context lost between the client and the person doing the work? Did the team know what decisions they could make? Was there a clear escalation path? Were standards taught before the work was delivered?

This episode is not an excuse for poor performance. Talent, training, accountability, and selection still matter. But replacing people without fixing fragmented communication, weak management, and unclear ownership only gives a new team the chance to fail inside the same broken system.
